Many Home Fires Start in the Kitchen

The National Fire Protection Association reported that US fire departments respond to more than 170,000 home structure fires per year that were started in the kitchen. Ranges and cooktops were involved in 61% of reported cooking fires.
The first thing you should you if you are dealing with a home fire is call 911.
Here are some tips for dealing with a kitchen fire emergency
- Do not leave anything unattended, and it is a good idea to set a timer.
- Keep a fire extinguisher close to the cooking area and make sure your family knows how to use it.
- If something starts burning but it’s small, cover it with a lid or another pan.
- Never add water to a grease fire. Use the fire extinguisher or baking soda.
- Do not let grease accumulate around cooking appliances.
- Make sure flammable objects are not close to the stove, such as towels, potholders, paper towels, etc.
- Make sure the smoke alarm in the kitchen is working.
