What Is Black Mold?

You may have seen some reports on the news warning you about the dangers of black mold. It is very concerning how the media over-sensationalizes the issue to drive more traffic to their websites or social media accounts. That is why we just want to tell you a few facts about this “toxic mold” to better understand it. According to the CDC Stachybotrys chartarum (the proper name for black mold) is a greenish-black mold that produces allergens and irritants. This type of mold is known to grow on material that has a high cellulose and low nitrogen content, for example, fiberglass, gypsum board, paper, dust, and lint. If any mold is found in your home or business it should be inspected and treated by a professional. You should be cautious around the infected area and be sure not to touch or disturb the mold.

Understanding Mold

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
