An Emergency Ready Profile: Don't wait!

10/5/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Emergency Ready Plan Call SERVPRO of Decatur today to schedule a short consultation to have your Emergency Ready Plan on its way to you!

Owning a business comes with a bevy of responsibilities, one of which being the most obvious— keeping the doors open. Did you know that as many as 50% of businesses close following a disaster? The best way to reduce business interruption following a disaster is to plan for it now!

Emergency Readiness Plan. Having a plan in place for your commercial property serves as an “insurance policy” for your peace of mind, at worst, which allows the opportunity to develop trust with your clients. At best, this plan will save you from an even greater problem that can occur if the situation is not met with urgency.

Emergency Response. Recently, a commercial property experienced a water loss from the supply line to a refrigerator overnight in its building. To his surprise, one of the building’s maintenance workers reported to work to discover what had taken place throughout the night. Once he notified the property manager, she referred to her Emergency Readiness Plan that was already in place, thankfully. Within a few minutes, she was able to make a phone call, and our team at SERVPRO of Decatur was there, with boots on the ground, in less than 45 minutes from the call.

Implementing the Plan. As you can see—having a plan in place is a crucial part to the process. It is the difference between confusion and chaos vs. clarity and peace of mind. Equally as important as having an Emergency Readiness Plan in place is having a company who is reliable and ready to respond 24/7. Once SERVPRO of Decatur’s Dispatcher notified our Priority Response Manager of the situation, he was able to immediately contact the property manager while in route to the location to ensure the water had been turned off at the proper shut-off valve. Thankfully, the plan was already in place and this property manager was able to proactively prevent a much larger situation from happening, such as multiple floors experiencing water intrusion from the loss’s origin.

Relying on Your Partner with the Plan. Getting your business back up and running is crucial, and as your Emergency Response partner at SERVPRO of Decatur, it is of utmost importance to us that your “returning to business as usual” happens as quickly and efficiently as possible. Because of the readiness plan in place coupled with SERVPRO’s unmatched response time, the entire floor that was affected from the water loss in this example was able to be fully dried in 3 days. Call SERVPRO of Decatur today to schedule a cost-free visit to put a plan in place, specific to your place of business, so that you can confidently deal with these type of unexpected events— (404) 378-9998.

Here to Help Regardless of the Nature of the Fire Damage

10/5/2022 (Permalink)

Firefighters at work When a fire disaster strikes, call SERVPRO of Decatur!

There is nothing easy about operating a business, even on an uneventful day. It can often feel as though there is not enough time in the day to proactively stay on top of the various items on your list that continue to mount as the days go on. This is a familiar feeling, right? Now, imagine for a minute that on top of attempting to meet the daily demands competing for your time and attention, your business is interrupted by a sudden water or fire damage from a natural disaster. SERVPRO is here to help, 24/7.

SERVPRO is the industry leader in commercial disaster cleaning, recovery, and restoration. As a business operator, it is paramount to have a trusted partner in the disaster restoration business in whom you can rely on to get you back on your feet. Our goal is to “steady the ship” by responding with our unmatched “Faster to Any Disaster” response time, to the situation so that you can continue to do what is necessary to keep the day-to-day to your business going forward.

No matter the cause of the damage, we can handle it. While it is important to determine the cause of loss in order to sufficiently mitigate the issue, it is just as important to have a clean-up and restoration company in whom you can depend on for responding to emergencies. Recently, a commercial property had a rented box truck full of company contents parked near the building that experienced fire damage from an adjacently parked vehicle that caught on fire. At the time the loss occurred, the business owner did not have all the answers, but his insurance agent knew he needed the Pros in Green at SERVPRO of Decatur to step in and help. While the building itself experienced little to no damage, the rented box truck had to be cleared of the debris left from the fire damage inside the truck so that it could be returned. Within a day and a half, the truck was professionally cleaned and able to be returned while the business itself was able to continue operating at its normal pace.

Regardless of the nature of the disaster. SERVPRO is here to help you continue to function operationally as a business without you having to sacrifice more of your valuable time by providing timely, actionable solutions to your emergency needs. Whether disaster strikes within the confines of your property or is limited to a company vehicle parked nearby, we are here to help you get back to business as quickly as possible.

If you own a commercial property, look for these issues around the building

7/6/2022 (Permalink)

Our Commercial Division sees a lot of inevitable but also avoidable issues around commercial buildings. Some of the issues are due to poor maintenance, old buildings, structural issues, etc.

We like to talk to Engineers and Property Managers and explain the importance of building upkeep. If they see recent cracks, it is important to investigate to make sure that it is not a sign of larger underlying issues. This is especially troublesome if cracks are found in the foundation of the building since it can indicate structural issues. If you see leaks, no matter how small, you should call a professional company to do a thorough inspection, since there could be hidden problems behind walls, cabinets, ceilings, etc. If the leak could be related to the roof, call a trusted roofer to inspect for missing shingles, holes, or other damages.

If you see any of these issues, consider calling SERVPRO of Decatur to do an inspection around your property. We have highly trained technicians available 24/7 to help you. Call us at 404-378-9998.

How Storm Damage Can Impact Your Decatur Business

7/4/2022 (Permalink)

Storm damage from thunderstorms, lightning, hail, flash floods, strong winds, etc. can be a huge problem for small businesses in Decatur. There could be water damage issues, mold remediation, reconstruction expenses, etc. There is always the cost of lost revenue when a business is forced to shut its doors since business continuity is crucial to any business. The Federal Emergency Management Agency estimates that more than 40 percent of businesses do not reopen after a disaster.

It is a good idea to unplug electronic devices to prevent power surges that can cause fires, especially if you do not have surge protection devices or ground systems in your office.  Conduct drills with your staff so they know what to do in case of an emergency, and where to go during a storm.

Commercial Water Damage and How to Deal with It

7/29/2020 (Permalink)

Time is money when it comes to water damage. Act fast, because the sooner you start mitigating the damage, the sooner you can get your business operations back and running.

Here are some tips to follow after a water damage:

  • Immediately turn off the electricity.
  • DO NOT use a regular vacuum to remove water (this is to avoid the risk of electric shock).
  • Wash your hands right after touching or moving contaminated items.
  • Have a plan to inform tenants of possible disruptions to their business.

Steps to take before professionals arrive:

  • Find the source and attempt to stop the water leak.
  • Mop up excess water.
  • Inspect furniture and upholstery and remove any wet materials.
  • Move art and other decorative pieces to a dry area to prevent further damage.

Fire Extinguisher Use

7/28/2020 (Permalink)

Fire extinguishers save lives

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says that having a fire extinguisher available is just one element of a fire emergency plan, but always keep in mind that the most important thing is SAFETY.

OSHA regulations state that business owners and employers are responsible for the placement, use, maintenance, and testing of fire extinguishers. They always have to maintain fully charged and operable fire extinguishers in designated places. All employees should be trained on how to properly use a fire extinguisher and regularly do fire drills to practice the escape plan.

If you must use an extinguisher, remember the word PASS

  • Pull- Pull the pin
  • Aim- Aim low at the base of the fire
  • Squeeze- Squeeze the operating lever above the handle
  • Sweep- Sweep the nozzle from side to side

Keep your Decatur building clean and your concrete floors shiny with these tips

7/31/2019 (Permalink)

One would think that concrete floors are relatively easy to maintain and keep clean, but just because they are easy does not mean that they don’t require regular attention and upkeep.

Some of the advantages of having concrete floors are that they do not require waxing and stripping every year like other types of floors, such as vinyl. They are also water resistant and won’t get damaged due to excess moisture. Concrete floors are durable and weather resistant and can withstand the effects of too much rain or sun.

How often to clean your floors will depend on how much traffic it gets.

  • Use a ribbed entry carpet mat to keep dirt, mud and grime off your concrete floors. This will help with the cleaning costs and wear and tear
  • Avoid harsh cleaning solutions such as bleach and vinegar
  • Use a neutral cleaning agent (specially around heavy traffic areas)
  • Use a microfiber pad to dry (or damp) mop
  • Re-seal your concrete floors every few years

Here are some things you can do if you ever experience water damage. Turn off the electricity (but only if it is safe to do so).  Try to locate the source and attempt to shut it off.

Never use home vacuums to remove water from a building to avoid the risk of electric shock. What does it mean when we talk about clean, gray, and black water?

6/4/2019 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Decatur- 404-378-9998

Some people new to the water damage business may be wondering what is the difference between clean water, gray water and black water. It is important to identify what kind of water affected your business because different sources of water cause different types of damage.

Clean water

This is the least contaminated, and it comes from a relatively sanitary source. It does not contain waste products and it comes from overflowing sinks, burst pipes, broken appliances, snow and rain.

Gray Water

Gray water contains waste products but it does not contain human waste products. Examples of this are dishwasher leaks, washing machine leaks, aquarium malfunctions, waterbeds, groundwater coming through the foundation. This type of water loss does not present the hazard of spreading diseases.

Black Water

This is the most contaminated type of water loss. The most common type is sewage back-ups. Floodwaters could be categorized as black water. In the restoration business we refer to black water damage as Category 3.

Don’t let a water loss turn into a contaminated loss

8/3/2018 (Permalink)

Call Us Today – We’re Ready To Help 404-378-9998

During the summer, if your business experiences a water loss where the power is shut off, the high temperatures and high humidity can cause microbes to grow much faster than one would think possible. We don’t like to think about it, but microbes are everywhere, and they can grow everywhere in your facility (wood, paper, drywall, insulation, carpet, etc.) These microbes become airborne and spread to other clean areas and create cross-contamination.

They key is to act fast to prevent a water loss job to grow into a contaminated loss.  If it is possible, and safe to do so, start extracting the water and get power restored as soon as possible. Decrease the temperature and moisture in the building. If possible try to keep humidity below 60 percent.

You need a company that is qualified to avoid microbe growth. Here at SERVPRO of Decatur, we are focused on reducing business interruption, reducing claims cost and minimizing callbacks. Our crews are highly trained restoration professionals that use specialized equipment and techniques to properly remediate the problem quickly and safely.

Icy Conditions

Much of Georgia is under a winter weather advisory with freezing rain and ice accumulation expected.

Here are a few tips your business should consider right now to prepare for inclement weather

  • Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Weather, such as wind, heavy rain and ice can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries.
  • Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential.
  • Inspect all handrails, stairwells and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.
  • Ask SERVPRO of Decatur Professionals about starting a Disaster Recovery Plan for your business.

Why you Should Keep your Commercial Air Ducts Clean!

7/7/2017 (Permalink)

Many people or businesses tend to overlook certain aspects of their commercial buildings when they are going through their maintenance checklist. One thing that is often forgotten about is air duct cleaning, because cleaning an air duct system that is not showing any obvious problems can seem like an unnecessary expenditure of time and money. According to the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) the rule of thumb for consumers is that “if your air ducts look dirty, they probably are.” While you do not need to clean you air ducts every year, it is not something that you do not want to forget to maintain. Below are some benefits to cleaning your air ducts:

  1. Improved indoor air quality
  2. Greater HVAC system efficiency
  3. Longer HVAC component lifespan
  4. Air duct cleaning conserves energy
  5. Air duct cleaning will save you money in the long run
